I’ve spent 35 years working across seven countries: Brazil, Canada, France, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. During that time, I’ve led global teams, negotiated complex deals and built businesses from the ground up in some of the world’s most demanding markets.
But one of my most memorable lessons had nothing to do with strategy or finance. It happened in Quebec, Canada.
Our team was struggling to break into the market. Local businesses were reluctant to engage until I walked into a meeting and spoke to them in French. Everything changed. They opened up completely.
From virtually zero, we built a business significant enough that we eventually had to bring in additional supply from the US to meet demand.
That experience taught me something I’ve never forgotten: language isn’t just communication. It’s trust. It’s access. It’s opportunity.
That’s why I founded The English Room.

A thought worth considering
Most people learn English to speak with native speakers: British, Americans, Australians. But here’s the reality of global business today. There are approximately 400 million native English speakers in the world, and about 1.5billion people who speak English as a second language.
That means the vast majority of English conversations happening right now, in boardrooms, on video calls, in negotiations and meetings across the globe, are taking place between non-native speakers. The Brazilian talking to the German. The Japanese negotiating with the Saudi. The Italian presenting to the Singaporean.
None of them are native speakers. All of them are communicating, connecting and doing business in English. The goal is to be clear, confident and understood by anyone, anywhere in the world.
